Reducing CO2 emissions [ Return towards  Environment  ]

Today, to preserve our environment, it is vital to develop, technologies that will allow the reduction of CO2 emissions, a greenhouse gas. Air Liquide is actively participating in these developments.

Everywhere in the world, power generation uses fossil fuels like coal, which emit CO2 which control is a major challenge in the preservation of the environment.

CO2 capture and storage are promising ways that consist in capturing industrial CO2 emissions as they are released from stacks, transporting them and burying them in the Earth’s deep layers. In This technology reproduces what nature has been doing for millions of years in natural CO2 deposits.

Generally, CO2 will be transported from its emission site to an appropriate site appropriate one for its burial. This CO2 must be concentrated in order for the process to be cost-effective and safe.

There are several existing techniques, among them: the use of oxygen instead of air, oxycombustion, which eliminates nitrogen (78% of air). It delivers more concentrated fumes (about 85% CO2) than air combustion (only 15% CO2).

By using the expertise, Group’s researchers are developing, in partnership with furnace manufacturers, these oxcombustion technologies. They are also working on CO2 purification technologies and are involved in many test projects in Europe, North America and Australia.
