The products contained in flexible packaging, such as PET bottles, must not be crushed, and rigid packages, such as cans containing non-carbonated drinks, must not be deformed.

To achieve this strenght, AIR LIQUIDE has developed the DROPPEL equipment which precisely places a small amount of liquid nitrogen (a "drop") in the headspace before the can or the bottle is sealed. Instantly vaporized, this increases the pressure of the headspace from 100 mbars up to 2 bars. Rigidity is then achieved.
