• Nitrogen production for enhanced oil recovery applications Nitrogen can be injected into existing wells to increase oil and/or gas recovery. Depending on the volumes and type of nitrogen required, it can be supplied either by large
high pressure nitrogen production units (cryogenic technology) or by
membrane modules. These units can also be used for coal bed methane production.
• Nitrogen production for offshore platforms MEDAL™ membranes can be used to provide inerting nitrogen for use on offshore platforms. These membranes are highly selective in reducing power requirements, and since they can be very compact, they need only minimal plot space.
• Enhanced oil recovery with carbon dioxide
Oil wells can be stimulated to ensure increased oil recovery by using of carbon dioxide (CO2). Usually, some of the CO2 used in the process returns to the surface in conjunction with the desired oil and gas.
MEDAL™ membranes can be used to separate the CO2 from the gas into a CO2 enriched gas and a hydrocarbon gas. The CO2 can then be re-injected into the well. The benefits of the technology include increased oil and gas production, reduced CO2 purchases and/or production and a reduction in CO2 emission.
