Lyophilizator  [ Return towards  Equipment  ]

A lyophilizator is quite a unique piece of equipment because it needs to cool (for freezing and trapping water), create a vacuum (to sublimate water), generate heat and transfer heat energy to the product.

Equipment includes:

  • An airtight pressurised vacuum chamber, which must also be able to withstand high temperature variations (from -80°C during lyophilization to +123°C during sterilization)
  • A collection vessel (or condenser), which can be placed within the chamber or in a separate vessel. This is where the water vapour turns into ice
  • A number of heat/cold exchangers, within which a heat transfer fluid circulates
  • A pumping group for lowering the pressure within the chamber
  • Cold is generated by the refrigeration groups, i.e. using liquid nitrogen
  • A regulation and control box for operating the lyophilizator
