In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, teams from Air Liquide in the U.S., the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago acted quickly to bring life-saving medical oxygen to Haiti. Air Liquide teams established portable medical oxygen filling systems in Haiti to provide for the medical needs critical to relief efforts.
Under difficult conditions and secured by a military escort, Air Liquide technicians worked around the clock to outfit and mobilize portable filling stations capable of filling 400 cylinders of medical oxygen per day. Air Liquide coordinated with the U.S. Embassy and other aid groups in securing staging at the Haitian and Dominican Republic border, followed by distribution directly into Port-au-Prince. Air Liquide personnel on the ground were fully operational within four days of the earthquake, and Air Liquide continues to provide the medical oxygen needs for a number of hospitals, as well as the temporary medical facilities in operation on the Brazilian military base near Port-au-Prince.
“The magnitude of suffering, loss of life and destruction from the devastating earthquake in Haiti has saddened us all,” said Michael J. Graff, president and CEO, American Air Liquide Holdings, Inc. and a member of Air Liquide’s executive committee. “At Air Liquide, our first thoughts and initial efforts were directed to finding ways to provide much needed medical oxygen to the rescue teams. I thank everyone involved for their sense of urgency and their resourcefulness in getting desperately needed assistance to Haiti.”
In addition to the company’s immediate support of relief efforts by providing medical oxygen and equipment where it is most needed, Air Liquide has made a substantial donation to the Red Cross and is matching employee donations.
