Air Liquide supports the “Lichtgrenze*” project in Berlin to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall

  • News

On 9 November 2014, Germany will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Air Liquide will provide logistical and technical support for an open-air exhibition called Lichtgrenze (‘Light Border’) taking place in Berlin. The Group will provide helium, nitrogen, technology and services for the 8,000 balloons due to symbolically trace the former path of the Berlin Wall.

The Light Border will stretch 15 km across the city of Berlin. The balloons will be lit up from 7 to 9 November and, in clear weather, the display should even be visible from space. On the evening of 9 November 2014, upon the signal from the mayor of Berlin, they will be released and float into the sky over Berlin in commemoration of the fall of the Wall.

Technology made in Krefeld

A team of Air Liquide engineers and workshop employees from the Air Liquide specialty gas plant in Krefeld-Gellep have designed a special mobile inflation system for transporting helium and nitrogen and inflating the balloons. Four transporters will be deployed. Each will be loaded with cylinder bundles and an 18-metre-long pipe ring along which up to 20 inflation points will be installed. The balloons are completely biodegradable so that they don’t impact the environment.
