Air Liquide operates the world's largest PEM electrolyzer fueled by renewable energies sources in Canada

Air Liquide has completed in Bécancour, Canada, the construction of the world's largest PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer. Fully supplied with renewable energy, provided by Hydro-Québec, this site strengthens Air Liquide’s position as a major player in the supply of low-carbon hydrogen.

The new 20 MW PEM electrolyser is equipped with Cummins technology, and is the largest operating unit of its kind in the world.

Producing up to 8.2 tonnes per day of low-carbon hydrogen, this production unit will avoid the emission of around 27,000 tonnes of CO2 per year compared to the traditional hydrogen production process. It thus confirms the viability of this technology on an industrial scale and marks an important step in having hydrogen play a key role in the energy transition.
