ALIAD, Air Liquide’s venture capital investor, has been supporting innovative start-ups for over a decade. Aligned with the Group's strategy, which places sustainable development at the heart of its action, ALIAD is currently focusing on three key areas: climate, healthcare and industrial innovation. These partnerships drive innovation and progress both for the Group and the start-ups we support. To learn more, we spoke with Virginie Reynaud, Managing Director of ALIAD.

What support can start-ups receive from ALIAD?

ALIAD helps young tech companies grow, from early development to industrial scale.

In practice, we invest in start-ups by taking minority financial stakes in their capital. But our support goes much further: we also create partnerships with various Air Liquide business lines, enabling start-ups to develop new pilot projects. This allows them to test and adapt their technologies to real-world industrial environments. Successful pilots can lead to broader deployment within the Group, providing start-ups with real commercial opportunities to accelerate their growth.

For us, it's more than just an investment: it's a win-win relationship. We believe that collaboration between established industries and young companies is a powerful source of innovation and progress, transforming visionary ideas into real projects to tackle pressing societal, industrial and environmental challenges. This is why we are always looking for promising young companies, which can contact us through our dedicated webpage.

How does Air Liquide benefit from partnering with start-ups?

By collaborating with start-ups, we inject new innovative and disruptive ideas into some of the Group’s activities. These new perspectives, which find their place within Air Liquide's innovation ecosystem, allow us to explore emerging technologies, enter new markets and enhance our offer to better meet the needs of our customers and patients.

With our deep understanding of Air Liquide's businesses, strategy and talent, ALIAD can identify and support projects and start-ups that best align with the Group's vision. The start-ups we support develop technologies to address climate change, offer new medical solutions for patients and innovate to improve the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of industrial processes. By focusing our investments on these three areas, we fully implement the Group's strategy of contributing to progress through technological innovation.

The synergies created between ALIAD, start-ups and the Air Liquide Group promote the exchange of knowledge, technologies and innovation. Start-ups benefit from our resources and expertise, while we strengthen Air Liquide’s ability to prepare for the future by staying at the forefront of technological innovation.

Can you give us some examples of successful collaborations between start-ups and the Group?

Over the past ten years, ALIAD has invested in more than 40 start-ups, and these collaborations have been truly rewarding, highlighting how start-ups and Air Liquide can achieve great success together:

  • In Climate Tech, we have partnered with 44.01, a company pioneering the permanent storage of CO₂ through mineralization technology. This groundbreaking approach helps protect the climate by converting CO₂ into rock, ensuring it can never be re-released back into the atmosphere. We're also supporting Orcan Energy, which converts waste heat from industrial processes into electricity, reducing CO₂ emissions and electricity costs by improving energy efficiency.
  • In the HealthTech area, a notable collaboration is with Angiodroid, which develops an innovative gas injection system for medical imaging.
  • Regarding Industrial innovation, ALIAD is supporting Ekoscan Integrity, which is providing integrity and sustainability solutions to extend the lifetime of industrial assets, helping us enhance operational excellence and reliability of our equipment. With Distran, specialized in ultrasonic imaging to detect leaks of all types of gases, we reduce our environmental impact and maintenance costs while ensuring the safety of our operations.

These examples of successful collaborations illustrate the diversity of the start-ups we work with and how, together, we can accelerate innovation in different fields with a shared ambition: to contribute to a sustainable future!
