Since 2021, Air Liquide is operating the world's largest oxygen production site in Secunda, South Africa. To reduce its carbon footprint, the Group has optimized its industrial processes while procuring massive amounts of renewable energy. Roel Zant, Commercial Director Large Industries South Africa and Energy Director Africa, Middle East and India at Air Liquide, tells us more in this video.
At Air Liquide, reducing carbon emissions is at the heart of our strategy. One of our sites that best exemplifies this is located in Secunda, South Africa, where we operate the largest oxygen production facilities in the world.
In order to decarbonize the site, the Group has invested to modernize the equipment and optimize processes. At the same time, we focus on the procurement of massive amounts of renewable energy. With our customer and partner Sasol, we have already secured almost 700 MW of renewable electricity through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), out of which 400 MW will be allocated to Air Liquide’s operations in Secunda. This will reduce the Group's CO₂ emissions by more than 1.2 million tonnes per year.
Beyond South Africa, Air Liquide is actively developing similar decarbonization initiatives across the Africa, Middle East, India region and worldwide to keep advancing on our sustainable growth trajectory. To be continued…
